Sunday School is a vital disciple-making strategy in the church. It involves systematic teaching of biblical principles by spiritually mature teachers to promote godly living, ministry, evangelism, missions, and church growth.
Origin (England):
Initiated in 1780 by Robert Raikes and Rev. Thomas Stock to educate underprivileged children in Gloucester. Lessons included reading, spelling, and scripture memorization, held on Sundays when children were off work.
By 1795, around 1,000 schools had been established.
Introduced in 1786 by Francis Asbury, a Methodist missionary following Raikes' model.
Adopted by the Assemblies of God, Ghana, through American missionaries like Madam Scott and Rev. Opuni. Initially used the U.S. curriculum, but a local curriculum is now being developed.
To make disciples by teaching God's Word, transforming lives, building healthy churches, and encouraging ministry with love, passion, and faithfulness.
